Atlanta wins series 4-1
This series has truly been the antithesis of everything the Boston-Chicago series has been. Josh Smith set the tone early, and Joe Johnson exploded from behind the arc to rout the Heat late, and advance into the second round and a date with LeBron James and the [...]
The Denver Nuggets beat the New Orleans Hornets to win their series and set a date with the Dallas Mavericks in the next round, while Joe Johnson scored 25 points to lead the Atlanta Hawks over the Miami Heat.
The Atlanta Hawks were able to limit Dwyane Wade and tie their series 2-2, but it’s the Western Conference games that provide the headlines today. The LA Lakers beat the Utah Jazz to become the second team to advance to the next round, and the Denver Nuggets humiliated the New Orleans Hornets, tying the NBA-record for biggest margin in the playoffs by winning the game by 58 points.
Only the LA Lakers won on the road today, as the rest of the home teams won their playoff games. Miami pounded Atlanta behind another stellar performance from Dwyane Wade, and crucially, Jermaine O’Neal. New Orleans won a hard-fought game with Denver with Chris Paul’s rediscovery of his shot, and Dallas wasted amazing efforts from Tony Parker and Tim Duncan to establish a 3-1 lead in their series.
The Orlando Magic were able to eke out a win over the Philadelphia 76ers to tie their series, Dwyane Wade and an awaken supporting cast led the Miami Heat to a win over the Atlanta Hawks, and Chauncey Billups is proving to be the x-factor for the Nuggets as they take a 2-0 series lead over the New Orleans Hornets.
We’re now on day 2 of these NBA playoffs, with all the teams completing the first games of their quarterfinal match ups. Aside from one upset, the rest of the games today were routs by the upper seeded teams against their lower seeded opponents. So far, the story of these playoffs has been the injuries - whoever is the healthiest team seems to be winning the games. That said, each series has only got a game apiece, so it remains to be seen if this continues, or if some of the teams can get healthier and bounce back.
