6 Things To Do When Bumming

Bumming is serious business these days. The economy, which has been struggling since time immemorial, is still at it. Kids who just graduated from college no longer have any illusion that it would be easy finding a job - let alone a job they would actually like. From the time you finish school until the time you officially start work, you qualify as a bum. By definition, a bum does not do anything. But then again, anything can be defined by anything and so a bum may actually do something.

I excluded going to the beach or taking a vacation as that is too unbecoming of a bum. I only included things worthy of the “bum” name. Here it is, six things a bum can do before the corporate leash catches him:

6. Whore Around

Everyone’s into photography these days. Phone cams, digicams, SLRs especially, they make you feel like a pro. Take a snap at everything you see and who knows, one of the hundred pics you’ve taken may actually be good. When staying at home you may even want to use that super-powerful zoom lens to spy on your neighbors. That’s what you bought them for right?

5. Bring Out The Inner Pig

They say that there is no love truer than the love of food… so bring out the inner pig and eat to your heart’s delight (or to your heart’s death). Personally, I prefer bringing out the pig and eating it. Is it just me, or is lechon really a summer food?

4. Do A Marathon Without Breaking A Sweat

The fat won’t stay unless you give it a chance. So after eating, indulge yourself in a movie marathon. Or if movies aren’t your thing, then pop in the downloaded TV shows you never got to watch because of all the school work.

3. Burn Some

Calories, that is. As you can see by now, bumming is a dangerous activity… in that all the inactivity can kill you. Do yourself a favor and do some physical activities too. Going down the stairs is a good start.

2. Campaign For Your Favorite Idiot

In just a few weeks, so few in fact that I may as well have said “in just a few days”, the country will be electing its new batch of leaders. Not that they are actually new, nor do we actually expect them to lead. It is said that every village has a village idiot. The Philippines, it seems, has gotten more than its fair share. Kidding aside, take time to vote at least. Then you’ll get to tell your grandchildren you participated in the first automated elections in our country.

Earth Hour 2010!

Earth Hour is coming up! On March 27, 2010 at 8:30 pm, let’s all turn off our lights (and electronic devices) for an hour to make a statement about global warming and climate change to the society.

Now, I know that this is going to be difficult for some of us. At this day and age, we are quite dependent on electricity to entertain us. Last year, I remembered my dad turning on the TV halfway through Earth Hour because he got bored. Earth Hour fail!

I did a quick search on what we can do during Earth Hour. The Globe and Mail suggested 60 Things to Do During Earth Hour. Here are six of those 60 Things that may be applicable to our country (my comments in italics):

2. Go for a walk and see what the neighbors have switched off. - Better yet, go for a jog. Some cardio would actually do your body good!

9. Dig out your clarinet, ocarina or guitar for an acoustic music night. Practice without looking at your hands. - Just make sure you don’t bother your neighbors who opted to just spend the earth hour quietly.

14. Throw an indoor marshmallow roast (use shish-kebab skewers, mini-marshmallows and a tea light). - Yum! They also suggested a fondue meal, too. But this one is way better!

16. Look for stars in the darker night sky, or moon dance. - I guess, if you’re with your special someone, it won’t hurt to do some cheesy romantic things.

23. Prove to yourself that, yes, you can go 60 minutes without updating your Facebook status. - Or Tweet, Buzz, Plurk or YM, or even SMS for that matter.

58. Start a pool on whether there will be a baby spike in nine months. - If you read the whole article, you’ll see why.
