PE Subjects in UP

While enlisting for subjects this coming semester, I decided to check on the list of PE subjects offered. PE subjects are free in UP and you can take more than the prescribed number, which is four. I noticed there are some activities they didn’t offer a few years ago and there are those that they don’t offer anymore.

Listing down the demand from last Thursday, the top ten PEs are:

1. Yoga - 575
2. Sports Climbing - 545
3. Duck Pin Bowling - 465
4. Cheerleading - 293
5. Walking for Fitness - 287
6. Arnis - 260
7. Striptease Aerobics (Women) - 237
8. Table Tennis - 227
9. Team Building - 212
10. Belly Dancing (Women) - 206
(Complete list at the bottom)

I can’t remember them offering Striptease Aerobics, Team Building, and Belly Dancing before. And I wouldn’t have guessed Yoga would be the most popular PE. The first PE I took was Stretching. My teacher described it as Yoga without the spiritual mumbo jumbo. After having taken it for one sem, I don’t think that description’s accurate. I think a better comparison would be that thing that you’re supposed to do while warming up for real sports like Judo. That’s what we do in Stretching - without proceeding to the actual sports part.

Back then, I thought it was pretty unusual as a PE. Scrabble and chess were even in the selection at one point. It seems PE in UP has gotten even more unusual these days with the addition of activities like Jiu-Jitsu and Mahjong.

Here’s the the full list of PEs with their respective demands. Most freshmen have already enlisted, so the demand shown here most likely does not include the sizable freshie demand.

  2. Striptease Aerobics. What up?! XD

Also, I LOLed at Stretching. Although, in hindsight, not to knock on Yoga or anything, but your prof did kind of have a point. :))

  4. Who was your teacher for Stretching? My friend actually teaches the belly dance pe class. I believe (as a belly dancer myself) that it’s a legit PE course. We actually just came back from a workshop in Malaysia. ;)

  5. Wala nang Philippine Games? :( I’ve always wanted to join that.

I took up Marksmanship in UP, so sad they don’t offer that anymore. Also Cheerdancing and Scrabble. Well at least they now have Mah Jong to replace.
