When I heard that Repertory Philippines was staging Sweeney Todd here, I was very excited. I loved Tim Burton’s 2007 film adaptation, which starred some of my favorite actors (Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Alan Rickman). So when I found out my old college org, Ateneo Celadon, was getting one of the shows, I didn’t hesitate to get tickets. I was finally able to watch Repertory Philippines’ performance of Sweeney Todd last Saturday. And I have to say, it was pretty darn epic.
Paramore Live in Manila, March 9, 2010! I’m saving up for this.
The first film in the series was so bad it was good. I admit it, I was entertained. New Moon isn’t as bad, but while entertaining enough, isn’t particularly good either.
Mini-reviews of Astro Boy (2009) and More Than A Game (2009)
“It’s a disaster!”
Those were the first thoughts that crossed my mind when I first saw the trailer and the premise of Roland Emmerich’s 2012.
And the latest disaster film from Roland Emmerich (the destroyer of worlds director of such films as Independence Day, Godzilla, and The Day After Tomorrow) certainly delivers a ton of disaster. More so than you may be accustomed to, and probably more than enough for, I don’t know, 10 disaster movies?
As a person gradually moves out from the cocoon of childhood to the exciting world that is adulthood, many of the terms he grew up familiar with take on new definitions. The old definitions don’t necessarily disappear, often they just become supplanted as defaults. “A drink” no longer means water. “Sex” no longer means gender. “Life” is now the opposite of “work”.
“This is a story of boy meets girl. But you should know up front, this is not a love story.”
Thus begins (500) Days of Summer, definitely one of my favorite films of this year, and possibly ranking among the best up there with my favorite romantic films.
